History & Significance

History of Dwarkadhish Temple

The Dwarkadhish Temple in Mathura was built in 1814 by Seth Gokul Das Parikh, a treasurer in the Gwalior state. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna in his majestic form as the ruler of Dwarka. The main deity — Dwarkadhish — is depicted in a dark-complexioned form adorned with rich garments, flowers and jewellery. The temple is managed by the Vallabha Sampraday (Pushtimarg sect), which follows the tradition of elaborate shringar and bhog offerings.

The temple is particularly famous for its grand celebrations during Jhulan Yatra (the swing festival), Janmashtami and Holi. During these festivals, the temple is elaborately decorated and the scale of celebration draws devotees from across India. Dwarkadhish Temple is considered one of the most important temples in the Pushtimarg tradition and in the broader Mathura pilgrimage circuit.
