About Radha Raman Temple Vrindavan

The Radha Raman Temple in Vrindavan is one of the most sacred and ancient temples in Braj Bhoomi. The presiding deity — Radha Raman — is believed to be a self-manifested (swayambhu) form of Lord Vishnu that emerged from a Shaligram Shila during the devotional practices of Gopala Bhatta Goswami, a disciple of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, in 1542 CE. Unlike most deities, Radha Raman has been continuously worshipped by the same family of priests for over 480 years without interruption.

History & Significance

History of Radha Raman Temple

The Radha Raman Temple was established in 1542 CE by Gopala Bhatta Goswami, one of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan and a direct disciple of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. According to tradition, Gopala Bhatta Goswami had received 12 Shaligram Shilas (sacred stones) from the Gandaki river. On the auspicious occasion of Purnima in the month of Vaishakha, the deity of Radha Raman self-manifested from one of these Shilas as a complete form of Lord Krishna.

What makes the Radha Raman Temple historically extraordinary is that it has been managed continuously by the descendants of Gopala Bhatta Goswami for nearly five centuries, making it one of the longest unbroken traditions of temple worship in Vrindavan. The temple escaped the Mughal-era demolitions that destroyed many other Vrindavan temples and the original deity worshipped by Gopala Bhatta Goswami himself continues to be venerated today.
