Barsana is widely believed in the Vaishnava tradition to be the birthplace and childhood home of Radha Rani — the divine consort of Lord Krishna. The Radha Rani Temple (Ladli Lal Temple) atop Brahmagiri Hill has been a center of Radha devotion for centuries. The current temple structure was built during the medieval period and has been expanded and renovated over the years. The temple belongs to the Nimbarka Sampradaya tradition.
Barsana is also celebrated across the world for the Lathmar Holi — the unique festival where women of Barsana playfully beat men from Nandgaon with wooden sticks (lathis) while the men try to shield themselves with shields. This tradition is rooted in the playful love story of Radha and Krishna and draws thousands of visitors and media from across India and the world every year.
Barsana is the sacred village where Radha Rani was born and grew up — making this temple among the most spiritually significant Radha shrines.
