History & Significance

History and Mystery of Nidhivan

Nidhivan — meaning treasury of the forest — is one of the most spiritually charged places in all of Vrindavan. Swami Haridas, the great saint and founder of Banke Bihari Temple, performed his devotional practices at Nidhivan for many years. It was here that the deity of Banke Bihari is said to have been revealed to him through divine grace. The grove contains hundreds of Tulsi plants and uniquely shaped trees whose branches grow downward rather than upward — a sight that adds to the mystical atmosphere of the place.

The mystery of Nidhivan deepens with numerous accounts from temple priests and local residents who describe unexplained sounds of music, anklets and singing emanating from the grove at night. A small Rang Mahal (palace) is maintained inside Nidhivan where fresh flowers, food, paan and cosmetics are placed each evening as an offering — and are reportedly found disturbed in the morning, as if used by someone during the night.
