History & Significance

History of Nand Bhawan Nandgaon

Nandgaon is the village where Nanda Maharaj — the wealthy and beloved chief of the cowherds of Braj — made his home and raised Lord Krishna after his birth in Mathura. After Krishna's birth, his father Vasudeva carried the infant Krishna across the Yamuna to Gokul, and later the family moved to Nandgaon where Krishna grew up, playing with the cowherd boys, tending the cows and performing his childhood leelas. The Nand Bhawan atop the Nandishwar Hill marks the site of Nanda Maharaj's original home.

The relationship between Nandgaon and Barsana — the village of Radha Rani — is central to the Radha Krishna love story. Krishna would regularly visit Barsana to meet Radha Rani and the playful exchanges between the residents of both villages are the basis for the famous Lathmar Holi tradition. Nandgaon's Lathmar Holi, where women of Barsana come to Nandgaon and play Holi with the men of Nandgaon, is a spectacular and joyful celebration witnessed by thousands every year.
