History & Significance

History of Radha Damodar Temple

The Radha Damodar Temple was established in 1542 CE by Jiva Goswami, the most prolific scholar among the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan. The presiding deity — Radha Damodar — was given to Jiva Goswami by his uncle Rupa Goswami. The temple became the intellectual and spiritual headquarters of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition in Vrindavan — a place where the philosophy, theology and devotional practices of the tradition were systematized through Jiva Goswami's extensive writings.

The temple is closely associated with A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada who resided here for several years in the 1950s and 1960s. It was at Radha Damodar Temple that Prabhupada began his translation of the Srimad Bhagavatam — the work that would eventually carry the message of Krishna to the entire world. His rooms are preserved as a shrine within the temple complex. The samadhis of Rupa Goswami, Jiva Goswami and other important Vaishnava saints within the complex make it one of the most sacred spots in Vrindavan for devotees of the Gaudiya tradition.
