History & Significance

History of Krishna Janmabhoomi

Krishna Janmabhoomi marks the spot where Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva inside a prison cell of King Kansa in Mathura. According to Hindu scriptures, Kansa had imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after a divine prophecy foretold that their eighth child would bring about his end. Lord Krishna was born as the eighth child at midnight in this very cell.

The original temple at this site was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over centuries. The current Keshav Deo Temple complex was rebuilt in the modern era and includes the sacred underground Garbha Griha, the main shrine, and a large mosque — Shahi Eidgah — that stands adjacent to the complex as a historical reminder of the Mughal-era demolition. The site remains one of the most significant and emotional pilgrimage destinations in all of India.
